The technical service specialist is the liaison between the medical
community and the St. Jude Medical sales force. Technical service specialists
are located near our customers and work out of their home or the regional sales
office, if one is nearby.
In this role, Enzo is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He may be asked
to participate in surgical procedures, offering implant support. Enzo also
serves as a back up to the sales team offering sales support, collecting data
for clinical studies, providing instruction at regional training seminars, and
providing one-on-one training to physicians, nurses, clinicians, and sales
personnel when new products are launched.
Enzo dressed and ready for an implant, in the operating room with a physician

"I am extremely motivated by
the positive impact St. Jude Medical makes on our customers, the
patients." Enzo continued, "I have run into many patients who are thankful to
have our devices implanted in their bodies." The opportunity to impact so many
people makes Enzo proud to be a part of St. Jude Medical.
What's a day like in the life of a technical service technician? Creative
thinking helps. Prior to an implant, Enzo visualizes the proper steps,
considering what is appropriate for the specific implant. He thinks about every little detail and what needs to be done on his part and the physician's to make
sure the procedure goes smoothly and the outcome is successful.
Enzo determines what products to use based on the patient's physiology. "My role
is to make suggestions to the implanting physician to help him or her make
decisions that reduce risk. I am also there to inform and educate the physician
about new products or approaches." It's critical that Enzo is alert and aware
of the situation in the operating room. He monitors the patient's vital
information, carefully observes the physician, and provides assistance as
needed. "After an implant procedure, I program the device per the physician's
specifications and what is best for the patient."
This partnership between the technical service technician and the physician is
one factor in a positive, successful outcome.
Enzo becomes familiar with the physicians and patients he serves
because his role doesn't end in the operating room. During follow-up
device checks, the technical service technician tests the device to ensure that
the internal programming is appropriate and effective. "I troubleshoot any
issues that may arise and my training and education gives me the tools needed
to address and handle any problems."
Communication and building personal
relationships are a critical component of his job. Enzo knows that he is a
representative for St. Jude Medical whether at work or play. His supportive
attitude comes across to everyone he meets.
Being a technical service technician does have challenges. The medical device
industry is highly competitive. Not only does Enzo stay current on the array of
new St. Jude Medical products, he must also be familiar with the competition.
Enzo says he enjoys the challenges as they keep him focused and on this toes.
"I must think out of the box to add value to the relationships I've made with
the medical community, as these one-on-one relationships are at the heart of
what makes St. Jude Medical special and unique."
