A clinical and systems engineer plays a major role in developing future medical devices. Leif works with technical experts from multiple disciplines (software, electrical and mechanical) to define system level solutions for new products, including defining requirements and the system architecture.

"Looking at system design from a platform architecture point of view forces me to look into how to design the system in a way that enables future expandability. The product must also coexist with other products already in our portfolio."

As the principal clinical and systems engineer, Leif is responsible for the overall quality of the system, making sure it meets customer requirements and is delivered on time. He also is responsible for planning and executing pre-clinical laboratory and field studies and is regularly called upon to support regulatory strategies and submissions. Once the product is ready to launch, Leif offers his technical insights and provides training. "I interact with a variety of people, both wihin the different development programs and with marketing and research teams."

During a typical work week, Leif spends a lot of time either individually or in collaboration with his skilled co-workers inventing and documenting efficient design solutions. "We must address the needs of various stakeholders both within and outside the program." Leif also attends weekly status meetings where he serves as a technical expert. "I contribute my years of experience and technical knowledge to help the team make balanced, well thought out decisions."

St. Jude Medical is a global enterprise with more than 13,000 employees worldwide. Leif's location, in Veddesta, Sweden, doesn't hinder his input and assistance to employees at other geographic locations. "I have a global role within the Cardiac Rhythm Management Division, so I have a lot of communication with people in both Europe and the United States, using whatever method is effective at pulling us all together." St. Jude Medical has invested in the appropriate technology (email, instant messenging, online meetings, blogs, etc.) to keep employees around the globe communicating.
