Grants Program

Physicians, hospitals, medical centers, continuing education providers, and others can use the St. Jude Medical Grants Program to request funding of eligible events, activities, and programs.

We act promptly on requests submitted online. Go to Grant Request Instructions to access the online request system. We recommend you review the information on this Web site before submitting a grant request.

Our Grants Program is structured to help us comply with:
  • Federal and state anti-kickback laws and the AdvaMed Code of Ethics for Interactions with Health Care Professionals, and
  • U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) prohibitions against off-label marketing and promotion.
Complying with the anti-kickback laws and the AdvaMed Code of Ethics is critical to us and in our customer's the best interests.

What type of grants are available through the St. Jude Medical Grants Program?
We provide two types of grants:

1. Charitable grants
2. Professional education grants

We only provide grants for programs, activities, and events that are related to cardiac disease states, conditions, and treatments for which St. Jude Medical products are used. For example, we do not provide grants for events to raise money for diabetes or cancer awareness or professional educational programs about drug-eluting stents. Information about our products is available in the Products section of this Web site.
What about grants related to St. Jude Medical's neuromodulation products?
ANS, St. Jude Medical's neuromodulation division, manages a separate grants program. Submit any grant requests related to neurostimulation or chronic pain conditions and treatments to grantscoordinator@sjmneuro.com.
What are charitable grants?
Charitable grants are given to tax-exempt organizations for activities, events, and programs related to cardiac disease states, conditions, and treatment for which St. Jude Medical products are used. Charitable grants include cardiac-related:
  • Fundraisers
  • Public and health care professional-in-training education and awareness
  • Other monetary grants to charitable organizations
Grants for professional education programs that offer continuing education credits and grand rounds must satisfy the requirements for professional education grants, even if the requesting organization is a tax exempt organization.

The St. Jude Medical Foundation will continue to review and decide on all fellowship and research funding requests during 2008. It is possible fellowships and research funding requests will become part of our Grants Program in 2009.

What are professional education grants?
Professional education grants are provided to:
  • Organizations sponsoring cardiac-related conferences, congresses, and other programs that offer continuing education credits
  • Hospitals for cardiac-related grand rounds travel and honoraria expenses
How can professional education grants be used?
Sponsoring organizations may request professional education grants to pay for:
  • General conference costs
  • Faculty expenses
  • Modest meals and receptions
  • Other specific program events and activities
Grants may not be used to pay for spouse and other guest expenses or for lavish hospitality.
Do I use the grant request process to offer St. Jude Medical the opportunity for exhibit space at an event or program?
It depends. If you are offering just exhibit space, contact your local St. Jude Medical sales representative. If you are requesting a grant that includes, but is not limited to, exhibit space, use the online grant request process.
Is there any other type of funding that is not part of the Grants Program?
Yes. In addition to exhibit space-only requests, financial support that falls outside of the Grants Program includes:
  • Funding provided by one of our product divisions for investigator-sponsored research.
  • Funding provided by one or more of our divisions to national and international professional associations and societies for their annual meetings. For example, the Heart Rhythm Society’s annual national meeting.
  • Anything that is eligible for funding from the St. Jude Medical Foundation, including funding for fellowships and research

Other types of financial support that falls outside of the Grants Program are described in the Grants Program Policy.

Where can I get a list of all St. Jude Medical grant requirements?
Our Grants Program Policy lists all of the criteria and requirements for grants.
Can my St. Jude Medical sales representative prepare and submit a grant request for me?
No. We do not allow sales representatives to prepare and submit grant requests so we can avoid government accusations about illegal kickbacks against you and St. Jude Medical. In addition, our sales representatives will not have all of the required information and documents.
Who at St. Jude Medical decides whether to approve or deny a grant request?
The St. Jude Medical Grants Committee reviews and decides how to proceed on all grant requests.
Can my St. Jude Medical sales representative make sure my grant request is approved?
No. Because of the anti-kickback laws and the AdvaMed Code of Ethics we do not allow our sales or marketing staff to participate on the Grants Committee.
What does the Grants Committee consider when reviewing grant requests?
Decisions are based on several factors, including:
  • Whether the request satisfies our Grants Program criteria
  • Relevance of the event, activity, or program to our business and products
  • Quality of the event, activity, or program
  • Budget for grants

For example, if the agenda for a two-day program has a limited amount of content that is related to cardiac conditions and treatment for which our products are used, the Grants Committee may decide not to provide a grant or approve less than requested. If, however, almost the entire agenda is related to cardiac conditions and treatments for which our products are used, the Committee may approve a larger grant.

Can we expect our grant requests to be approved since we are an important St. Jude Medical customer?
No. Again, because of the anti-kickback laws we cannot and will not base our grant decisions on the amount of business your company does with St. Jude Medical.
Are there any deadlines?
Yes. We must receive a complete request, including all required documentation, at least 45 days before the event, activity, or program. We will usually deny a grant request if we do not have all the requested information and documentation before the event, activity, or program. Because the Grants Committee meets once a month, we recommend that you submit your grant request as soon as possible to make sure we have all required information and documentation in time.
How long will it take for a decision on my grant request?
Most grant requests are approved or denied within four to six weeks after a complete request is received, including all required documentation. The date of the Grants Committee meetings varies, so we cannot tell you the cut-off date for each month.
If our grant was approved last year, can we assume it will be approved this year?
No. Because of the recent changes to our Grants Program, there will be some grants that have been approved in the past that will not be approved in the future.

Also, as the Grants Committee reviews the hundreds of grant requests we receive each year, it may decide to fund different programs, activities, and events.

Always submit your grant request allowing plenty of time to seek alternative funding in case the Grants Committee decides to eliminate or reduce the support you received in the past.
If you approve less than I requested, may I resubmit a grant request for the unapproved amount to the Grants Committee, the St. Jude Medical Foundation, or someone else at St. Jude Medical?
No. The Grants Committee does not approve multiple grants for the same event, activity, or program. If the Committee approved less than what you requested, it decided to do so based on criteria discussed above.

As indicated below, the St. Jude Medical Foundation does not provide funding for events, activities, and programs that are included in the Grants Program. The Foundation will not provide additional funding.

Finally, no one else within St. Jude Medical may provide grants for events, activities, and programs that are within the scope of the Grants Program.
If my grant request is denied, may I submit it to the St. Jude Medical Foundation?
No. The Foundation does not provide funding for activities, events, and programs that are included in the Grants Program. If we receive a grant request that should have been submitted to the Foundation we will forward it to the Foundation. The Foundation also forwards to us any requests received that should have been submitted through the Grants Program.
If my grant is approved, who do I contact regarding any exhibit space, ad space, or tickets included with the St. Jude Medical grant?
If there are event tickets or exhibit space available to us with the grant, contact your local St. Jude Medical sales representative. For print deadline and ad requests, call Mary Harper at 512.329.1095 or email her directly at mharper@sjm.com.
