On September 3, 2004, the Superior Court of the Province of Québec, District of Montreal decided to allow a lawsuit against St. Jude Medical to proceed as a class action on behalf of all persons who were implanted with a Silzone-coated heart valve in Québec between July 7, 1997 and January 21, 2000, and all persons who were implanted with such a valve outside of Québec and who resided in Québec on December 13, 2002.
It is important to recognize that the Court has not decided that there is anything wrong with the Silzone-coated heart valve or that St. Jude Medical has done anything wrong. St. Jude Medical contends that the most recent scientific research shows that there is no evidence that patients who are currently implanted with the Silzone-coated heart valve are at any increased risk of complications. The legal questions raised in the Québec class action should not be considered medical advice concerning any valve recipient's specific circumstances. Anyone with a Silzone-coated heart valve who has questions about his or her medical condition should consult a physician.
