Can Travel with My Wife
Ollie Hill always had difficulties breathing, but he thought his problem was
related to his lungs. In December 2002, he found himself out of breath more and
more frequently. In January 2003, after Ollie had walked the dog and climbed
the stairs he had to lie down because of sudden dizziness. He fainted and his
grandson immediately dialed 911 for medical assistance and started beating him
on the chest.

Ollie was rushed to an emergency room in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, in severe
respiratory distress. Doctors determined Ollie was suffering from aortic
stenosis, a type of coronary artery disease in which there is a
narrowing or a constriction of the valve opening. Ollie needed heart
valve replacement that day.
Vibhu
R. Kshettry, MD implanted an SJM Epic™ stented tissue valve at Abbott
Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, the first U.S.
implant under a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) investigational
device exemption (IDE) clinical study.
Ollie was released from the hospital after three days and spent four weeks at a
rehabilitation home. He improved so quickly, according to his wife, Grace, that
he tried to run away and come home.
Today Ollie is more active since his surgery. His breathing is normal, not
labored and he no longer wheezes during the night. At age 86, Ollie, a World
War II veteran, is more vigorous than many younger people.
Ollie's eternal optimism and his new valve allowed him to reclaim a normal
lifestyle which includes walking his dog Harry, who follows him around
constantly. He also likes painting and gardening. Ollie also spends time on his
favorite hobby, fishing with his friends. Ollie and his wife now have the
chance to travel, a passion they both share. Since his surgery, they have
already traveled to Florida and are planning many additional adventures.
