Is SCS therapy right for you?

Spinal cord stimulation—including new BurstDR stimulation—may be an option if you have:

  • Chronic pain in your back, arms or legs that has lasted at least six months
  • Neuropathic pain (pain marked by burning, tingling or numbness)
  • Little or no relief from surgery, pain medications, nerve blocks or physical therapy

SCS therapy is not right for everyone. Only your doctor or pain specialist can determine if SCS may work for you. SCS is not advised if you are unable to operate the system or do not receive effective pain relief during the temporary evaluation. Talk to your doctor about complications related to the procedure and/or device, which include infection, swelling, bruising, undesirable changes in stimulation and loss of strength or use in an affected limb or muscle group (e.g., paralysis). How BurstDR™ stimulation works

  1. Pain signals travel up the spinal cord to the brain.
  2. A generator, similar to a cardiac pacemaker, sends pulses to a thin wire called a lead.
  3. The lead delivers these pulses to nerves along the spinal cord.
  4. The pulses modify the pain signals as they travel to different parts of the brain.
  5. The pulses change the way your body perceives pain—providing potential relief from physical pain as well as the suffering* associated with pain.3,4

System components

An SCS therapy system is made up of parts that are designed to work together to help you manage your pain:

Generator for SCS therapy system.The generator produces the pulses that manage your pain. It is a small device, usually implanted in the abdomen or buttock area, which is connected to the leads.

Leads that deliver pulses from the generator to nerves along the spinal cord. The leads are thin wires that deliver pulses from the generator to nerves along the spinal cord. Leads are placed in an area along the spinal column called the epidural space.

Handheld controller for adjusting an SCS sytem. The controller is a handheld device similar to a remote control that lets you adjust the therapy. The patient controller for the latest St. Jude Medical™ recharge-free SCS system features an Apple iPod touch mobile digital device.
