Iris’s CardioMEMS™ HF System Story
Iris describes her life not all that long ago as “carefree.” She enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and going to see her beloved Texans, Houston’s pro-football team.
That changed in 2010, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The following year she underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. A year later, “life was almost getting back to great again.”
Then she started feeling short of breath and unable to walk very far. She spent a few days in the hospital, where doctors found congestion and diagnosed heart failure. Then her doctor called and recommended the CardioMEMS™ HF System and explained how it works.
The CardioMEMS HF System is the first and only FDA-approved heart failure (HF) monitoring system proven to significantly reduce HF hospital admissions and improve quality of life in New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class III patients.
Before, Iris’ congestion could not be detected until it had already accumulated and was damaging her heart. Now, the CardioMEMS HF System detects problems before the patient even feels them, keeping health care providers informed so they can adjust Iris’ medication as needed.
“I feel like my health is now in my control, and that’s just made a big difference,” she says. “I can literally play with my grandkids now.”
A season-ticket holder for the Texans games, Iris had been giving her tickets away for several years because “sitting at the game there that long was just a no-go.” Now she’s back in the stands, as energetic a fan as ever.
Says her sister, Jannetta, “As a caregiver, when you are able to watch someone get back their life, be able to do some of the things that they were not able to do, to see them just to smile again and not be depressed and not worry—that in itself is enough.”
For Iris, there’s comfort in knowing someone is looking out for her health on a daily basis.
“Being able to know that someone is watching and helping me to maintain those levels, to keep the pressure off of my heart—that’s what makes the biggest difference.” Iris says.
