Mechanical Heart Valves for Heart Valve Replacement

Designed to mimic and function like a natural, healthy heart valve, mechanical valves open and close with each heartbeat, permitting proper blood flow through the heart. Mechanical valves are made from manufactured materials and designed to last a lifetime. They typically do not wear out or break down.

If you receive a mechanical valve, you will need to take a blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication every day. Blood-thinning medications delay the clotting action of the blood, which helps prevent blood clots from forming on and around the valve.

The St. Jude Medical commitment to safe, reliable and effective mechanical heart valves

With more than 30 years of heart valve expertise, St. Jude Medical is committed to the advancement of heart valve technology. We have designed our mechanical heart valves to last a lifetime. Long-term studies show that St. Jude Medical™ mechanical heart valves demonstrate consistent blood-flow performance over time.1,2

In a 15-year study of more than 2,400 St. Jude Medical mechanical heart valve patients, most of them were able to perform their daily routine activities better than before the valve replacement, despite being older. The patients also had a quality of life comparable to that of the general population.2 In a 25-year study, the longest of any bi-leaflet mechanical heart valve, the St. Jude Medical valve was shown to have low complication rates over the long term.3

The SJM Regent™ heart valve featured below is an example of our innovations in heart valve technology.
