Effects of Radar on St. Jude Medical Implantable Cardiac Rhythm Devices

Background

Radar, as used in speed guns, has not been reported to cause any interaction with cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

St. Jude Medical routinely tests for compatibility with electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the two MHz range as a qualification test for all new pacemaker and ICD designs. Radar transmissions occur in the MHz range and above. Current pacemakers and ICDs have specialized feedthru filters, which are highly effective in filtering the MHz frequency ranges.

Our pacemakers and ICDs have been used in patients at civilian airports, Air Force bases, and civilian and military naval ships. To date we have no clinical reports of electromagnetic interference (EMI) with radar in the above listed environments.
